Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services on October 1 during the 6th edition of India Mobile Congress (IMC), 2022.

5G is the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.

Cellular phone companies began deploying this technology worldwide in 2019.

Like any other wireless cellular network, the service area is divided into small geographical areas called cells.

All 5G wireless devices in a cell are connected to the internet and telephone network by radio waves through a local antenna.

The main advantage of the 5G network will be greater bandwidth, higher download speed, and more.

The 5G network has increased speed due to additional higher-frequency radio waves in addition to the low and medium band frequencies used in previous cellular networks.

The greater bandwidth will increase the usage of 5G networks as general internet service providers for laptops and desktop computers.

At present, only two telecom companies – Jio and Airtel offer 5G in select cities like - Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Varanasi etc.
